Hello summer, our old frenemy. We love you when it’s sunny, but why are you sweating all over us with your BFF NOLA humidity? It’s melt-your-face-off hot thanks to the NOLA heat. It’s like the sun isn’t kissing our skin, but rather smothering us with a towel out of the dryer. But beyond the sweltering, sweaty and swampy conditions, we have some ways to keep it cool or to add some spice to your life. Let’s go to the dewy slopes of things to help you out this week.
Get outta town – Avery Island
Just over two hours west of New Orleans in the coastal marsh of Iberia Parish lies Avery Island. It is not an island in the true sense, but rather a geological formation known as a “salt dome,” and it is here that Ned McIlhenny — of McIlhenny Co. — first began producing Tabasco sauce in 1868. Click here on how you can take a day trip to this spicy place.
Celebrating a legend – Dave Bartholomew
“Ain’t That a Shame’ on a ‘Blue Monday.” We went and celebrated the life of the architect of the New Orleans sound Dave Bartholomew. A second line in Treme had mourners and family members remembering the legend. Bartholomew died at 100. Here are images from the second line.
Life in bloom – Blucid Floral changes hearts, builds community
Brandi Charlot is matter-of-fact when she talks about her successes. Carol’s Daughter, Dillard University, Ciara, Diana Ross, Jazz Fest; these are just some of the clients she has cultivated since opening her business, Blucid Floral (pronounced Be Lucid), in 2015. She talked to us about her confidence and clear vision of building her success.
