Weekend Picks: Voodoo Fest and all the brews and boos you can handle

by Mary Staes | October 26, 2018

Halloween weekend is here! Since Halloween falls in the middle of the week, this weekend is the best time to get all your ghouls together for guilt-free fun without having to worry about work in the morning.

Here are our picks for this weekend:

Voodoo Music + Arts Experience

This is one of the biggest things going on this weekend for sure. Friday, Third Eye Blind is headlining, returning 20 years after they kicked off the very first Voodoo Fest. Childish Gambino cancelled his Saturday performance at the last minute, being replaced by Travis Scott, but if he isn’t your thing, Odesza is playing at the same time. Sunday features Modest Mouse and 21 Savage, so whatever your taste in music is, Voodoo has it.

Boo at the Zoo

This event is definitely the thing to do if you’re a parent. All of the kids come in costume, and a lot of attendees do family costumes, too. There’s a special section for trick-or-treaters, a mildly scary haunted house and ghost train, and games for kids to play. There’s also costume contests each of the three nights, and wagon decorating contests you can enter. Tickets always sell out, so make sure to grab them BEFORE the weekend. They’re $20 per person.

Brews and Boos

So, you’re not into the crowds at Voodoo Fest. What about an adults-only night at an amusement park, with beer? Sign me up. Tickets to this annual event include unlimited City Park amusement rides, glow necklaces,  jello shots, a DJ, keepsake cup and unlimited beer. And because it’s Halloween, costumes are always a plus.

“Plastic” premiere

Local spoken word artist YahJah is premiering the short film to her spoken word piece “Plastic.” YahJah added that the event is special to her because she was recently diagnosed with mental illnesses and wants to help normalize the conversation around that and break stereotypes and stigmas, according to her event page. Half of all the proceeds from the event will be donated to NAMI and the True Love Movement.
