The Bastard Bearded Irishmen: A Pittsburgh St. Patrick’s Day Tradition
The Bastard Bearded Irishmen is a Pittsburgh band that is well known for Irish music. The band began playing in local pubs, which led to three albums (Drinking to the Dead, Rebastard & Rise of the Bastard), and a tour schedule that allowed them to share a stage with bands such as The Rumjacks and Gogol Bordello. They’ve also opened for that other well-known Irish band, the Dropkick Murphys on the “Shamrock N Roll” tour in Pittsburgh.
Each year, the band plays a St. Patrick’s Day concert at the Rex Theater, which they affectionately call “St. Party’s Day.” Due to current circumstances, they have postponed the concert to the summer. Instead of an indoor show, the band performed a mobile concert along Carson St. on Saturday.

Danny Rectenwald, mandolinist for the Bastard Bearded Irishmen, explains, “Instead of just canceling, we decided to do a virtual performance since most people will just be stuck at home on St. Patrick’s Day. It’s our hope that our fans will be able to still enjoy our show while practicing social distance. It’s a bummer that people can’t gather together as they would under normal circumstances, but it doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate life, music, and a stiff drink. We hope to bring some fun and happiness to a difficult situation.”
