Burning of Zozobra

zozobra9

In 1924, local artist Will Shuster burned the first Zozobra in a friend’s backyard for a few fellow artists. Standing 50 feet high, Zozobra or “Old Man Grouch,” a giant marionette built of wood, wire, cotton and cloth is now burned prior to the annual Fiestas de Santa Fe in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The burning of Zozobra has taken place for almost a century and is meant to dispel the hardships and struggles of the past year.
