Remember when we told you about the Fussfungle, Pittsburgh’s lesser-known cocktail export? Well, thanks to our friends at Pennsylvania Libations, East End Brewing, and Prohibition Pastries, we are throwing an impromptu party in the Strip. You’ll have an opportunity to sample this pre-Prohibition cocktail alongside a flight of beers. Yeah, sort of like a boilermaker – the other drink that put Pittsburgh on the mixology map.
What’s the Fuss about?
We recently reached out to Cody McDevitt, co-author of the book “Pittsburgh Drinks: A History of Cocktails, Nightlife and Bartending Tradition,” who detailed this historic Pittsburgh cocktail for us.
The short synopsis: The Fussfungle originated in McKeesport circa 1902 (well, at least that was when it was getting press), and was eventually found in bars from New York City to Kansas. It’s a little sweeter than an old-fashioned, and was originally pre-batched.

Let’s be honest, parking in the Strip isn’t so great, especially now that Smallman is under construction. The weather looks great, maybe take a bike ride or tap that Lyft/Uber button. Lots of bus lines cross through the Strip on the way to Downtown, including the 86, 87, 88, 91, and 54.
And as a warning, note what the Brooklyn Daily Eagle observed about those who had drank the Fussfungle: “With a few pints of this delectable compound circulating through his system the merrymaker takes joy in shooting holes through the persons of his family and choicest friends. He is ready to carry an election with it, or to dance down the strongest set of legs in his social circle, or to get up a strike, or to burn his house, or to do almost anything else that will express his high vitality and joy. The only trouble about it is that the police will not always let him.”
