Something is – collaboratively – brewing.
The team behind Fresh Fest, the nation’s first craft beer festival promoting the achievements of people of color in the craft beer industry, is partnering with East End Brewing to bring back For The Culture.
The 2018 iteration of For The Culture, a limited-run collaboration beer, was available on draft (and in cans) for several months at East End’s Larimer brewery and Strip District taproom. It was also prominently featured and served to attendees at the inaugural Fresh Fest Beer Festival on Aug 11, 2018.
Brewed in partnership with Black Brew Culture, a Fresh Fest co-founding and organizing partner, this year’s For The Culture will be marked with a release party and a few variations on the beer itself.

Head to Ace Hotel for the Silent Disco release on Fri, May 17
Although Fresh Fest 2019 isn’t until Aug. 10, For The Culture has been brewed, conditioned, canned and packaged for release three months ahead of time.
The official For The Culture release party will be marked by a Silent Disco at Ace Hotel Pittsburgh on Fri, May 17. Tickets are $15 each and can be purchased online through the Fresh Fest website. This is an official Fresh Fest preview event.
In addition to your first pour of For The Culture and entry into the Silent Disco, all ticket holders will have first dibs on new Fresh Fest merchandise, a la carte eats by Whitfield, specials on OTHER East End beers on tap at Ace Hotel on Friday and the option to purchase four-packs of For The Culture cans to-go for $18.
The Fresh Fest leadership team will be on hand, along with the DJs they’ve brought on board for the Silent Disco:

- HollyHood – Hip-Hop / R&B
- DJ SMI – Dancehall / World Beat

A Slightly Bigger (and Much FRESHER) Beer
For The Culture is categorized as an imperial brut india pale ale (IPA); expect a champagne-type mouthfeel and character (similar to last year). The 2019 version differs in two areas: strength and look.
Per the Fresh Fest website:
“We brewed this year’s batch with slight increases in both hop character and ABV. The ABV (increased) from 7.9% to 9.1%, using a bit more Pilsner base malt and amylase enzyme after our Dry Hopping rest. Similarly, we upped the hopping overall from 3.5 lbs per barrel to a ridiculous 5.1 lbs per barrel, using the same three (hop) varieties: Nelson Sauvin, Hallertau Blanc, and Idaho 7.”
The sleek new can label directly shouts out Black Brew Culture on a matte black finish with silver accents. For The Culture cans are available in 16-ounce four-packs ($18 per four-pack).
