Tune into our episode of “Eat Play Stay” on Abita Springs for all the small-town flavor just across the causeway from NOLA.
EAT – ABITA SPRINGS RESTAURANTS
Abita Springs Café and Abita Roasting Company
At the Abita Springs Café, diners can feast on breakfast treats like huevos rancheros Benedict or praline chicken and waffles or sumptuous lunch and dinner options. The café prides itself on big portions, so come hungry! In 2014, the café joined forces with the Abita Roasting Company. If you’re looking for a morning pick-me-up, fresh coffee beans, or an evening cocktail, the café has you covered.
Mamma D’s Pizza and More
Mamma D’s is a family owned and operated pizzeria across the street from the Abita brewpub. This isn’t your average pizza place—not only is everything made fresh in house, but patrons can enjoy such delicacies as Texas barbecue calzones or pizza with spinach and shrimp.
Abita Brewing Company
Since 1986, Abita Brewing has been making delicious beer with local springwater. Some locals favor the original Abita Amber, while others like to mix things up with a Barney, a mix of Abita’s Andygator and Purple Haze. Whatever your drink of choice, enjoy it with some crab claws or a barbecue burger, both prepared with Abita beer.
PLAY – THINGS TO DO IN ABITA SPRINGS
Abita Mystery House
Run by artist, inventor, painter, outlaw, and mad scientist John Preble, the Abita Mystery House and UCM Museum has treasures hidden in every corner. Part folk-art installation, part colorful maze, the museum is home to curiosities including miniatures, hand-built arcade games, and taxidermied alligators.
Tammany Trace Rail Trail
The Tammany Trace rail trail, which locals call simply “the Trace,” is a local trail that runs right through the center of Abita Springs. Local hikers and bikers will find 31 miles of paved trail and boardwalks at their disposal. In Abita Springs, the Trace connects everything from Abita Brewing’s taproom to the local park pavilion.
The Springs
Abita Springs started as a Choctaw village based around the springs, which the Choctaw believed held healing powers. The springs in Abita Springs’ name refers to the town’s still-flowing artesian wells, which thirsty visitors can drink from!
Gold Coast Skydivers
Gold Coast Skydivers is the go-to spot for thrillseekers in Abita Springs and surrounding region. The instructors have a good sense of humor they’ve earned after 20 years in the business. Take a jump with them to see Louisiana from a pelican’s-eye view!
