Best Bets for the week of July 9: Creepy Fest, One-Woman Shows & More

by Alex Galbraith | June 10, 2018

New Orleans doesn’t take days off. Even after a week that included Independence Day celebrations and the largest non-Mardi Gras celebration on the city’s calendar, there’s still plenty to do this week. From the 10th take on a punk and horror institution to a through-the-looking-glass dance party taking revelers and Lindsey Buckingham for a ride, we’re sure that you’ll find something to get you back out of the house. Check out our top picks for the week of July 9:

We’ve written about Black Girl Giggles Comedy Festival a lot in the last week. But that’s only because they’ve been doing so much! The festival ends its run tonight (July 9) with a staging on “PerVirgin.” The one-woman show started when Nkechi Chibueze was asked to share an uncomfortable truth: that she was 34 years old and had never been kissed. Once the exercise was over, she realized she had a lot more to say about it. The hilarious and uncomfortable show is the final night of BGG and ends with a dance party to celebrate.

Where: Cafe Istanbul, 2372 St Claude Ave.
When: Monday, July 9, Doors 7 p.m./Show 7:30 p.m.
Tickets: $20

Independent horror producer and Pallbearers member Bill Heintz has managed to keep his yearly punk and metal bacchanal going for a solid decade and this year’s lineup might be the strongest one yet. Look for surf-rock Misfits cover bands, all stripes of punk rock and sets by legends like Dead Boys and TSOL. It all kicks off on Thursday and runs all weekend.

Where: Various venues
When: July 12-15
Tickets: Varies

Go because Paramore are low-key legendary. Stay because Jay Som put out one of the best albums of 2017 (and you still have a soft spot for “Pumped Up Kicks”).

Not a typo, we promise. If you’re looking for the genuine article, they won’t be in town until next year. But if you want to hear raved up takes on Laurel Canyon’s most bitter band/relationship petri dish, don’t miss this party. The pair of DJs distort all your favorites through the lens of disco, house and techno with a loving fan’s eye toward re-imagination.

Where: One Eyed Jacks, 615 Toulouse St.
When: Thursday, July 12, 9:00 p.m. til late
Tickets: $12

Running Of The Bulls

While we wouldn’t put it past New Orleans to let bulls loose in the street, our annual spin on the Festival of San Fermin is a wee bit safer and a whole lot drunker. White and red-clad runners try (or more often don’t) to stumble out of the way of New Orleans’ own bulls, in this case rollergirls wearing horned helmets and carrying small bats.

Where: Begins at the Sugar Mill Lofts
When: Saturday, July 14,  8:00 a.m.
