New Orleans Fabric Artist Finds ‘Super’ Fix For Massive Pothole

by Alex Galbraith | August 1, 2018

Pottspurls has spent the last few years forcing us to do double-takes at all sorts of everyday New Orleans objects. The fabric artist drops colorful artwork known as “yarn bombs” across public spaces, adding a splash of color and softness to mundane street elements like phone booths or abandoned shopping carts. However, her latest piece is finally taking on the most everyday, New Orleanian occurrence of all. Near the intersection of Amelia and Freret streets, she’s installed a yarn version of the piranha plant from Super Mario Bros.

The colorful plants sneak out of a section of bright green pipe, gobbling up the titular hero much in the same way that our world-famous potholes eat suspensions. Another photo shows how the yarn art manages to stand in the middle of the sandy street.

The installations are temporary by their very nature, so you’ll have to get down there quick if you want to see it. Yarn doesn’t stand up to New Orleans’ summer storms for long. And the city might even start fixing the street. One can dream, right?

For more creative fixes, don’t miss our crafty solutions to New Orleans’ pothole problems.
