It’s been three days since we lost Tee Tee Aretha. We’ve mourned, second-lined, bounced and even did choreographed dances for Ms. Franklin.
Today, some of the city’s most talented vocalists and musicians will come together for an Aretha Franklin tribute show at the Ace Hotel’s Three Keys venue.
The show is free and open to everyone of all ages “to keep it in the spirit of Aretha,” says Jocelyn Ninneman, the hotel’s music program manager.
Because the venue holds about 110, you’ll probably want to get there early. (In New Orleans, we know that means about 15 minutes after the doors open.) Doors open at 8 p.m.
Three Keys very recently started hosting its August Sunday night blues sessions with Sierra Green & The Soul Machine, who will help lead tonight’s Queen of Soul honoring. Others slated to perform include: Kayla Jasmine of Tank and the Bangas, Marilyn Barbarin with Marc Stone, Caren Green and many more.
“It’s going to be one long open jam session, and we’ll probably wrap up at midnight,” Ninneman said. “In many ways, we’re going to church, after church.”
