đź“° Life After The Weekend: Dec. 2

by Clint Durrett | December 2, 2019

Thanksgiving brought the calories, conversation and catching up with those who we hadn’t seen in a hot minute while Black Friday took aim to empty our wallets. And now with Cyber Monday here, we’ll be focused on the digital deals of the internet. But the news hasn’t stopped in New Orleans. The Crescent City was snared and pulled into the national headlines after a shooting on Canal Street on one of the busiest weekends in the city. We’re here to catch you up with the latest on that incident and other information to know.

10 Injured In Canal Street Shooting: What We Know

Early Sunday morning, at least 10 people were injured in a mass shooting on Canal Street. Two of the victims were listed in critical condition, according to police. The shooting began around 3:30 a.m. Sunday. One person is in custody and being investigated, but New Orleans police say no one has been arrested in the incident. The shooting happened during a busy weekend for New Orleans. The Bayou Classic annual football game between Grambling State University and Southern University brought scores of revelers into the Crescent City – many of whom were still downtown and in the area when the shooting erupted. Surveillance video from the scene shows a panicked crowd abruptly run as gunfire began. New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell issued a statement on Sunday morning, saying that her administration would not “…allow incidents like this to derail the progress we have made, or to further disrupt our community” (WDSU | WWLTV | NOLA.com)

Six Mass Shootings Have Occurred In New Orleans Since 2013

The mass shooting reported early Sunday marks the sixth time that 10 or more people have been injured or killed in a shooting in the Crescent City since 2013. In the previous five incidents, multiple people fired into a crowd. Causes of the shootings range from gang violence to arguments gone awry. Those shootings happened in May 2013, June 2014, November 2015, November 2016 and July 2018. At least 20 people were injured in each of the 2013 and 2015 shootings. (WDSU, WWLTV)

More Shootings Reported Sunday

The shooting on Canal Street early Sunday wouldn’t be the sole violent incident reported. Two other unrelated shootings happened Sunday afternoon. Around midday, a shooting was reported in the 2000 block of North Dorgenois Street in the Seventh Ward. Two people were killed and two others were injured. Another shooting was reported later Sunday in the 1300 block of St. Bernard Avenue. One person, who police only described as a male victim, was injured. (NOLA.com)

Hurricane Season Ends: Above Average Number Of Storms For 2019

November 30 marks the end of the Atlantic hurricane season. While New Orleans avoided devastation from a hurricane, there were more named storms than average this year. Eighteen storms were named this year with six of those becoming hurricanes – three of which became major hurricanes, according to WDSU. Dorian was the strongest at Category 5 and hit the Bahamas. The average numbers for the Atlantic season are 12 named storms, six hurricanes and three major hurricanes. The 2020 Atlantic hurricane season begins June 1. (WDSU)

$75M Project Closes Portions Of Convention Center Boulevard For December

Portions of Convention Center Boulevard will be closed through December as crews continue work on a $75 million safety and beautification plan, according to a report from WDSU. The portion of closures includes Convention Center Boulevard from Julia Street to lake-bound Calliope Street. Sidewalks and pedestrian access will be limited. Officials expect the road to be fully open Jan. 1. The construction project will convert parts of the boulevard into a 7.5 acre landscape and public park that is expected to be complete in the fall of 2020. (WDSU)

Saints: Do refs flag them more than opponents?

Fans of the Black and Gold haven’t been fond of the officials clad in black and white on the field. After a no-call of blatant pass interference during the NFC Championship game in February, referees have been the target of memes, the cause for a protest parade and the subject of Halloween costumes. The NFL officials have thrown more flags against the Saints in favor of their opponents than any other team in the league through 11 games, according to a report from WWLTV. However, the Saints are not the most penalized team. The station reported that the Cleveland Browns have been penalized 94 times in the 2019 season. (WWLTV)
